Welcome to BYC. Glad you decided to our flock. X2 on drumstick diva and that 10 to 1 ratio. As he matures, your rooster will become very hard physically on your single hen; over-breeding her, biting and plucking the feathers from her neck and feathers, battering her, and potentially injuring her. The only reason you need a rooster is to fertilize eggs for hatching, and 1 rooster can easily handle 10 hens in this regard; and the physical abuse will be spread out over 10 hens instead of all dumped on 1 hen. Please feel free to ask any questions you may have. We are here to help in any way we can. Good luck in getting some more RIR hens.

I'm glad you joined us.

Yes, your rooster would probably be much happier (and the hen would be happier, too) if he had more hens. Ideally, you want each rooster to have at least 8 hens, to prevent overbreeding. I hope you can find some more hens! I'm sure a Delaware/Rhode Island Red cross would be very pretty.

Good luck with your chickens! I would definitely recommend getting more hens for your rooster.

I got two more hens today and she decided to fight one so she is in the box of shame and he is with the knew hens chasing them around the cage attempting to extend his bloodline.
