Hello everyone! New member here from the snowbelt of Upstate New York between Syracuse and Rochester. Yes, this is the area that gets an average of 125 inches of snow each winter. We had chickens in the early 1990s when the kids were young, and started a new flock in 2020. The first time we had Buff Orpingtons and New Hampshire Reds. The Buff Orpingtons were very robust and productive and great with the kids, so they were obvious choices for the new flock. We also have Buff Brahmas and Gold-Laced Wyandottes this time around that make a great flock together. They have a huge run--over 850 square feet in two separate but connected areas, an Amish-made coop, and a very small coop that can be used as an infirmary or a brooder as needed. We are looking forward to getting some Speckled Sussex and Jubilee Orpingtons next Spring.
