Upstate NY
hello,
we rent on a large property in upstate new york. our landlady is the BEST and lets us live here with our indoor zoo (2 dogs, 4 cats, 2 lovebirds, and a snake). now we are also getting CHICKENS! i found my coop design here on backyardchickens, and just finished it up today in time to pick up my chickens on tuesday. they've been hand raised in a classroom at the school where i work.
we're starting out with just 6:
1 light brahma rooster (JR)
1 light brahma hen (vandana)
2 brown leghorn hens (lucinda & tony stark)
1 araucauna hen (tallulah)
1 australorp hen (virgil)
our neighbors also have chickens, and their rooster is really aggressive! if anyone has ideas on how to introduce our flocks, i'd love to hear them.
i'm also looking for a wall-mounted grit hopper, either to purchase or build, as our floor space is at a premium. anyone?
thanks so much! i'm excited to have an outlet for all my chicken questions and energy.

first of all from another Upstate Nyer!!!

second-unless you know with 100% certainty the health of your neighbors birds-do not introduce then:( You are taking a chance of getting your birds ill-or pick up lice-mites etc... or vice versa with their birds meeting yours. It's just not a good idea as all new birds should be in quarantine for at least a month before introducing any new ones into you troops.
