New member here, answering the standard questions:
(1) Are you new to chickens / when did you first get chickens?
Not entirely new. My grandmother raised chickens, turkeys, and ducks when I was a kid, but it's been probably 35+ years since I've handled any. We just ordered chicks this morning to start our own flock. Decided that with the number of eggs our family goes through each day, it might be cheaper to raise our own birds.
(2) How many chickens do you have right now?
Ordered 16 birds this morning. Due to arrive in April.
(3) What breeds do you have?
Dominiques and Orpingtons
(4) What are your favorite aspects of raising backyard chickens?
Self reliance
(5) What are some of your other hobbies?
My daughter and I are historical reenactors (American Revolutionary War time period). The rest of the family may be joining us in that adventure more often. I also enjoy woodworking, model building, designing, and a host of other things.
(6) Tell us about your family, your other pets, your occupation, or anything else you'd like to share.
I'm a stay-at-home-dad of 5 girls. My oldest is 23, and out of the house. My youngest is 2. We have a small herd of Nigerian Dwarf goats, a rabbit, a couple of cats, and a dog, so animals and chores are not new to us.
(7) Bonus: How did you find BYC, how long have you known about BYC, and what made you finally join our awesome community?
Found the site while looking for chicken coop plans. Decided to join after reading all of the great articles and forum posts that I've been browsing for the past week or so.
