Hey y'all! I'm new to BYC and semi new to chickens.
I had two chickens, Silkie and Polish, about 4 years ago when I lived in California
Now I've moved to Indiana (near Louisville ky) and am wanting to start again. Do y'all know the best breeds that can handle the heat and cold and are good with handling?

I'm excited to be a part of this community!

Welcome to BYC. Glad you decided join our flock. I would personally recommend Australorps which are extremely hardy in both heat and cold, calm and gentle (my children and granddaughter made lap pets of them), and the best layers of the standard, brown egg laying breeds. Murray McMurray has an excellent "chick selector" tool at https://www.mcmurrayhatchery.com/chick_selector.html to help you determine which breed is best for you. Just be sure and click on "show more characteristics." Even if you don't buy your birds from Murray McMurray, their "chick selector" is still an excellent tool to use. Please feel free to ask any questions you may have. We are here to help in any way we can. Whatever breed you decide to get, good luck with your flock.

Welcome to BYC! Please make yourself at home and we are here to help.

Definitely check out the links Michael has left for you. Here are couple others that might be helpful

I would recommend barred rocks, black australorps, wyandottes, sex links and buff orpingtons. All are cold hardy and generally do well in heat. Plus they all are usually friendly and love to be held.

Welcome fellow Hoosier!

My three favorites are:

1) Reds [Rhode Island or New Hampshire ... pretty much both have merged into a "Production Red" these days]

2) Barred Rocks [best bird for breeding sex links], and

3) Black Australorps [Buff Orpingtons are cuter I think, but their eggs are too small].
