Cacciatore, I was born and raised in the SF Bay Area! I was transplanted here to Idaho three years ago, but of course I left my heart in San Francisco (Bay Area).
Welcome!!! Are you planning on getting a friend for your chicken soon? Chickens are very social animals
BYC will answer so many questions for you (starting with the peanut one). You will be amazed at the knowledgeable people on this site and their willingness to help!
Yes, I've decided to get some day old chicks and slip them under her in the night. She seems to be broody so I think this will work for her? That was actually my question, how to do this? But I found my answers in the appropriate forum.
I got the peanut question answered by the veterinarian and the lab so I'm thinking about just posting a warning to others who might not know that peanuts can dangerous to chickens. The previous homeowners fed peanuts to the squirrels and I found a HUGE pile of shells under a bush. My chickens must have been bug hunting in the pile and accidentally ingested some of the mycotoxin
. We cleaned up the pile to keep Francine and the future chickens safe. I only wish I had known earlier so I could have saved Lois. She was never ill, I woke up in the morning and she was dead. The veterinarian said that she was the healthiest looking dead chicken that he had ever seen, except for her liver which we sent to the lab where they discovered the mycotoxin.
