This is my second attempt at raising chickens. Last time I started with a mixed flock of retired layers numbering 12 hens. Not particularly having any idea as to how to cope with the predation we had at the time, the entire flock was killed over the course of three nights by what I realize now were a combination of fox and raccoons. The flock had come through the winter season healthy and safe, and I was not prepared for the boom of predators come summertime.
Anyway, it's been five years since I last tried raising chickens, and I've learned a lot since then. This year's flock will be starting on pasture in the next two weeks in a big 'ol tractor my partner in crime designed. The plan is to move the tractor daily. This year I am raising 50 cornish cross for slaughter in August. I will be processing and freezing them for year-round home-grown goodness. I am also raising 25 Dominique straight run. I want to eventually breed them for size and hopefully recover genetics for the slate/blue barring. Ultimately working towards a self-sustaining dual purpose flock. Ambitious goals!
Honestly I was avoiding introducing myself here, but have found lots of answers here as well.
