Hey, i just signed up and wanted to say Hi.
I am looking to find a chicken breed that does not fly but still has good egg laying capability. I want to have chickens but instead of keeping them penned up I want to let them run free, however to do this I need to be able to keep them out of my garden so they do not scratch up my garden plants. To keep costs down i want to only have to put a 3-4 foot tall fence around the garden, and so need a breed that can not fly over that. I do want meat from the chickens (by butchering) but I also want good egg production.
I am considering the plymouth rock or the Buff Orpington breeds. does anyone know if they would/could fly over the fence into my garden or would my vegitables be safe?
