My Coop
I have four 8-month-old Black Australorps who are all happy, seem healthy, and eat egg-layer pellets as their feed. They have water available near their coop/run and all over the yard. They get the same treats - grubs and a scratch mixture - once a day. They are free-rangers, all day long, from sunrise to dusk in my backyard. They were each laying an egg (4 per day) during the summer's warm, sunny weather. Now it has cooled down, we've had some occasional cloudy, cool, sometimes rainy days and nights down to low 40s. Nothing else has changed except the weather and the leaves which are blown into the yard, and they love to eat. They are now laying 3 eggs per day, and that's the only change in their behavior. They run around the yard and hill, take lots of dust baths, scratch and peck at the soil all day long, eating well as a group, and are roosting and sleeping all night.

Their poops remain the same size and consistency, Some are their normal brownish with white, some are greenish, possibly from the new Desert Willow leaves they are eating. But some are a darker color, dark gray in color, sometimes appearing black, and this is now in the last two or three days.

Is this a sign of disease if everything else is the same with the hen's normal behavior? Any suggestions or ideas if anything is wrong.?

I'm attaching the three colors of poop that were laid this morning, brown, green and grey/black. Thank you!

Sounds like they are active and having a good time!

I don't see anything concerning about the poop either.

Thank you for answering! I live in a small town in the high desert, and we do have a vet, but I think he's more of a large animal/dog/cat practice. I really appreciate your comment, it makes me feel so much better. I love these little girls, and would hate to think I didn't help one of them if there was an issue with her health. This morning when I did my morning poop pick-up in their coop and in the yard, I didn't see any that looked really black/gray, so I'm thinking it might have been caused by something one of them ate, bugs or something... I appreciate your experience!
:love
