Greyslyn was the gray egg layer I made a thread about when I first became a member. I am going to catch people up on what is going on, and where I will take it now..
.
When I first started buying chicks I would get what ever the feed store had, then I started to hatch my own eggs from local farmers. Some of the farmers had chickens that were pretty and would lay very pretty eggs. That really got my juices flowing and my chicken math kicked to high gear.
But one day, I got eggs from a local farm. One of the eggs was a gray color without the color being the bloom. I went bananas for it!
I set the egg but it didn't hatch. I thought, how can I breed chickens to create gray? Then I took a splash hen "Sally" I had that laid Mauve eggs...The egg shown was the very egg Greyslyn was hatched from.
Which were pretty on their own and almost already a gray color, (She is a mystery bird, someone gave her too me) 2012?
and breed her with a splash rooster that was frizzle that had a green egg gene. "Silver"
He was not the prettiest rooster in the world and was always molting and looked like he was not wearing pants. On top of that he was hen crazy! I sent him down the old rooster HWY (crossed the road over to the other side.) Right after on the radio I hear some song called "I am a silver man". I felt bad, then I really felt bad because his babies were so cute.
.
Greyslyn as a chick, and with her best friend LO named "Lydia"
Her egg...
Greyslyn had a few babies
2 hens looked just like her and laid gray eggs, one was a boy who looked like her. Frizzle and blue/lav color I gave away the boy, and gave some eggs to people living in ID to hatch, eventually lost Greyslyns 2 girls. Some years went by and Greyslyn was an old hen and was never a good egg layer to a non-egg layer. Last year I had a friend who had only one old hen who wanted a friend for her hen, and didn't mind if the hens were older. Since I was going on a trip and was more worried about Greyslyn because of her age, So I gave Greyslyn to my friend, so I would not worry about her. The very next year I got a call from the same friend and she said "Greyslyn is laying eggs again." I said "What? She is so old though..." My friend said Greyslyn has been also mating with a BCM rooster. I knew Greyslyn must be atleast 8. Anyhow I got 4 of her eggs and 3 hatched. I hoped to get more look-alikes of Greyslyn but got 3 black hen chicks (darn BCM) That may also make the eggs turn dark green. We will soon see, another month?
,
2 frizzles and a smooth, I am going to breed to get back the blue feather color, but I may also breed with my AC mix because he is so handsome and I am hoping to have black frizzles with black eyes!!
!
But mostly I will try and breed them with something blue feathered I have a blue cochin
He will be old enough ...in the spring.
