Grinding oyster shell

Only otster shell I can find has pieces that I think are way to big for quail. I put some in a baggie and busted it up with a hammer, what a pain. Anyone cone up with an easier way to bust it up without using a blender or food processor?

I have no idea and I have never tried this but just on a hunch, I would try getting it very hot in a dry skillet on the stove top then dumping it into ice water.

I have a feeling the thermal shock will cause it to crumble fairly easily, but I could be dead wrong.

I just take boiled chicken egg shells, crush them up and give them to the quail... Much easier than messing around with oyster shells and less of a risk of the quail choking.

I hate it when a quail chokes, that hind lick maneuver always leaves a bad taste in my mouth....

I got tired of hammering oyster shells, too! Garrie Landry's website offers fine grit/oyster shells that work well for quail. It's small particles. It looks like what you'd find at the beach... millions of tiny shells and shell fragments and some grit, too. Don't expect fancy packaging with it or anything, though. When my package arrived, it was just a priority mail envelope filled with the grit. No bag. It arrived a little on the damp side (probably encountered moisture en route) and smelled rather musty. I baked it at 500 F for an hour and that took care of the moisture and odor. My buttons seem to like it just fine.
