Treats keep making their way into my brooder via my very well meaning husband. Today it was a grasshopper that I took away once he had been pulled apart because I have not given my babies any grit. They are 2 weeks old. Can I add a little grit to their baby crumbles? I don't want them to become impacted.

Grit is not needed. Millions of chickens are raised every year and they never see the tiniest bit of grit. I have raised chickens for 55+ years and never provide grit. The only time that I might think that grit could be needed is if you were feeding some whole, dry, and very hard seeds, such as sorghum. Then you MIGHT need grit, and even then if you don't provide it, they likely would be just fine.

thanks for the info.i have went to three counties looking for baby chic grit.and stressing out because i could not find it.i did find grit for parakeets but it does contain calcium which i have seen on this site that its hard on their kidneys.

I feed Grit o mine, I get the Chick grit from local feed store and TSC has it also. A guy down the road from me has 100's Of chickens and assorted birds ( he sells them ) and he doesnt give them any grit and he doesn't seem to have any problems.
