Grit and Oyster shells

Great visual and explanation!
I can't take all the credit. The awesome image came from My Pet Chicken!! I love chickens and my layers are my pets, but I raised Cornish cross this fall for the first time and was fascinated when gutting them to see it all laid out there. My favorite part was actually opening up the gizzard to see what they had going on in there. We live in coal country and all of them had pieces of coal in there. Another had a tiny piece of plastic. Whoops. Those birds eat anything!

at what age do you start supplementing the calcium? my bag of oyster shells say 20 weeks but my friend says to start now @ 14 weeks.

So as I have birds of different ages, I always have oyster shell out. Doesn't hurt to have it out now, or a little later, or even earlier... the younger birds may sample it but shouldn't want to chow down on it. But it's convenient for them to learn where it is so they can easily access it when they do need it.
