My chickens are teenagers, probably 13-15 weeks old. I have no idea if their former owners gave them grit. I was actually under the (wrong?) assumption that chicken feed had grit mixed in it. I'm feeding them DUMOR chick starter/grower crumbles, 20%.

My chickens are in a traveling tractor which we're moving about every 2 weeks.

Should I be feeding them grit?

One other thing is that I'm seeing that one of the chickens (not sure which) is pooping a different color from the others. While the others' poop is gray/white, this poop is runny brown with no white. Anything I should be concerned about?

For clarification, the brown poop is like a completely melted tootsie roll. No form to it at all.

I have been giving them treats. Yesterday it was a few tomato slices, the day before it was some celery leaves (they didn't touch,) and before that it was some dry whole old-fashioned oats. There are 5 chickens in all. Is this too many treats?

Chickens (chicks) should have grit from day one. But, you can save lots of money by just buying bags of sand instead of investing in grit from TSC.

Grit helps them digest all of the fiber they eat.

Oh, I forgot....Chicken poop comes in all shapes, sizes, colors and textures

. Somewhere on the net there is a lot of information on different "looks" of poop. I am sure someone can/will point to this vast source of information for you.

My general rule about "piles of poop" is as long as your chickens LOOK and ACT healthy, you probably don't have anything to worry about.

Thank you! Do I give them the sand in a bowl/feeder, or sprinkle it on the ground? Will any sand do? We have a sand pile my husband will be spreading around the yard to even it out. Would some of that work?

Just went to check on them and one of them had either pooped or vomited (didn't see it happen) a white, watery liquid that kind of looks like egg whites. It just sat on top of the ground; didn't soak in. All the chickens are acting fine, eating well, etc.

What to do??
