grit anybody?

I think the hens are smarter than me about what they really need--so I supply them lots of oyster shell and grit, even though they are on layer food. They can take what they need, and it doesn't hurt to have it there. I also noticed that my pullets started eating oyster shell a few days BEFORE they started laying--that's one of the ways I knew they were going to lay--smart birds!

LOL Chookchick.......I agree......they're smarter than me too!
Another sign I've noticed when they're getting ready to lay is that they squat when I go to pet them. That's sort of how I can tell who's laying and who isn't.
when they aren't laying in winter.......they all run from me. But when they're getting ready to lay, they will squat when I go to pet them. I guess they think I'm a rooster!
