Hi all.

Is it a good idea to start my almost five week old chicks on grit? They are on Blue Seal medicated chick starter feed but I also give them little snacks like yogurt, cantelope and cabbage.

They have been pecking at soil I put in their cage for them to play around in (which they LOVE) and that has small pebbles in it of course.

Thanks!

Yep, that will serve the purpose just fine. If you have access to some clean sand that would also work.

They sure love to play in the clumps of sod though...

hi there - yes, it's a good idea to have some sort of grit available to them, especially if you offer treats. i used to buy the chick grit by the pound at the feed store (and i've seen some say that you can get parakeet grit at the pet store or pet section of larger store). now i still offer my big girls hen sized grit that i buy in 50# bag (gigantic and will last me forever, but it was cheap) even though they also free range in my backyard for a few hours most afternoons.

have fun with your peeps!
