:)is it neccessary to make commercial grit available to 4 8week old chicks who have just begun to spend large amounts of time (10-12) hours per day outside in a run composed of grass and dirt? thanks for any advice!

no, if you read the bag most grit is for birds 10 weeks old or older, I got a bag and looked like the grit was kinda big so I smashed small amounts of it with hammer and sprinkeled on food for a few weeks , I never had a problem..

If you are feeding mash, crumbles or pellets, grit is not necessary. If you are feeding whole, dry, hard seeds of some sort, you may need some grit. Millions of chickens are raised each year without ever seeing any grit.

Thanks to all for your replies.
My chicks are on mash, with access to grass and dirt. My concern arose after I saw some posts by folks who I believe said that their chickens had developed impacted crops because they did not have grit.
