Grit for Chicks

Is it alright if I use some sand that I have in my backyard as grit for my 2 week old chicks? It is very fine. All help is greatly appreciated!

I think if it was fairly coarse sand. I just used parakeet grit from a pet store. It had some large sandy particles and some really small pieces of rock or whatver...I sprinkled the coarse sandy stuff over their feed. They'll only need it once your start offering "treats" or foods other than their chick feed.

I actually took a hammer to a piece of cobblestone to mash up my first batch of grit... I am sure the purists here would frown, but the chicks gobbled it and thrived... Try it! They like to choose the pieces, so grab your hammer and a piece of granite just in case.
