I have some store bought grit for adult chickens. Could I take a hammer and bust it up finer for my chicks?

I would go and get chick grit. You could try to break it up, but it would be easier to go get it.

Since it's likely granite, you may not be able to bust it up.
If they're only eating chick starter, they don't have to have grit but it's a good idea.
#1 chick grit is only for the first 4 weeks. #2 adolescent grit is for 4-8 weeks.
