Grit for pullets?

At what age do I need to start giving my pullets grit? Or do they even need it? They are on starter feed now. I will be moving them outside at 5-6 weeks. At 3-4 weeks I will start taking them out for a few hours a day in a wire kennel to help transition them. Once outside they will be able to get the grit from the ground in the run. Do I need to give them grit before they go outside?

They need it now. If you can't find small enough grit, you can buy cage bird grit at the pet store.

Wait.. Not the origional poster.. but if they are on starter chick feed they still need grit? or is that usually contained within the starter?

Chicks eating nothing but starter feed do not need grit. It's not that it contains grit, it's that the pieces are ground so finely that further grinding is unnecessary.

They start needing grit when they are eating anything other than starter feed.
