Grit from soil?

I just got my chicks, , I've read that if you give them anything but starter food they need grit.. Some say that giving them a clump if grass or clover or similar they will get the grit that they need, my question is, the soil/dirty around my house is very clayey, will that be sufficient for grit? ur do I need to get something sandier?

Clay won't do it, unless there are little rocks, sand or pebbles in it. They need something small and hard that they can save in their crop to grind their food.
