I am talking about DUCKLINGS, of course.

This company in Mt. Airy, maybe in the Carolinas, produces 50# bags of

Starter Size
Grower Size
Developer-Layer Size

The bags say 'Grani-Grit' on them.

The starter size is really coarse! Little jagged pieces of gray granite. Probably 1/16 to 3/16 in. in size.

I just can't see any duckling or chick taking one of those in.

Especially since I've read recommendations to use PARAKEET grit for chicks. That stuff is like fine sand. NO WHERE NEAR the coarseness of Grani-Grit's so-called 'Starter Size'

Here is their website. The pictures aren't too good, though

I have given parakeet grit all the time, but I have the Grani-Grit Starter size, which I am leery of trying.

SO DOES ANYONE USE ANYTHING BESIDES JUST SAND OR CAGEBIRD GRIT FOR THEIR DUCKLINGS??

Hi! I was out all day today building my duck pen.

Here is a picture of the chick-sized grit I fed my ducklings from day three or so. Now. By fed, I mean I put at first maybe a half teaspoon to a teaspoon in their crumbles in a six inch chick feeder (the ones that look like flying saucers).

I would put another teaspoon in at the beginning of each day. Not much, but a tiny bit each day. When they are on crumbles, I don't know that they need much grit, but without grit, they cannot digest anything other than crumbles, and I wanted to be able to feed them greens and peas.

The pic is a little blurry, but I think you can see the size of the particles.

I put the ruler underneath so you could see the size. I have medium-sized woman's hands, if that helps.

I agree with keeperofthehearth,
The sand ( I use builders sand ) is so much cheaper...
We use builders sand as a "grit" for all our birds and bed there pens/ runs with it..
