I recommend looking up "chicken supply stores near me", or looking for the nearest Tractor Supply. I believe they go past Ottawa (according to google), so if you live near the States, you'll find one!

Grit is nothing more than small sharp edged stones. You can offer concrete sand. Offer a big tub of it and they will dust bathe in it too.

Welcome to Backyard Chickens! We are glad you joined the flock! BYC is a helpful site providing all the information you need to know about poultry! There is always space for more members on the BYC roost! Not being able to purchase grit in Canada is beyond strange to me. I wonder how feed stores, hatcheries and other companies are able to provide it for their poultry out there. Keeping the chicks in a penned area outside maybe extending a heat lamp out there should work so you don't need to give them grit. Chickens can be penned up or free range and they don't need a heat lamp at all! Hope you enjoy it here as much as we all do!

Also don't forget, you can crush egg shells up too, I'm in the UK and I bought my grit from the local farm shop, it has mixed grit and oyster shell, having said that I free range my chickens and as already said they probably get what they need pecking about.

Look for a local quarry, grit is typically granite crushed small, but just about any hard rock will do.
