Good morning,

If the run is lined with sand, do I need to provide additional grit or will they get what they need from the sand. It's a courseish sand with some little pieces of shell or rock in it.

Personally, YES. I would provide grit (crushed granite) free choice. Just place it in a small cup attached to a post in the run - they will take what they need.
While they may find suitable grit in the sand - a 25lb bag of grit can be purchased for around $10. That amount will last you years.
 
Unless you know there's plenty of particles in the sand mix that are grit sized and sharp and hard enough to work as grit, I'd just spend a couple of dollars and get a bag which should last you many years.
