Hello all,
I am a first timer, and my chicks showed up today. I ordered a small batch of chicks, 5 to be exact and they arrived today in a nice little box with a heat pad. I took them all out and inspected them one by one, I wiped their vents with a warm cloth to make sure that they didn't have pasty vents and then I transferred them into the brooder. It is about 100 F, they all have drank some water and some are starting to eat some starter feed. But one of the chicks, just seems to be really groggy. She is lowering her head and closing her eyes and almost falling asleep, while the other four are running around and inspecting everything. She does perk up if startled or the other chicks are bumping her, but she just seems a little off. Should I be worried?? Any help would be great. Thanks.

Did you dip her beak in the water so she knows it's there? Sometimes, they just don't pick up on it from the others. THey can dehydrate VERY quickly.

Yes, I dipped her beak and I have seen her drink, but indeed it has not been as much as the others have been drinking.

Isn't 100 degrees too high? Could she just be overheating? I thought new chicks were supposed to be in about 95 degrees, with a place to move away from the heat if they wanted to.

I thought it might be a little warm too, so I backed off the light a little bit and moved it so there is plenty of room to get to cooler places in the brooder and she seems to be pepping up a bit. Thanks.
