Chickens do exhibit the most 'interesting' behaviour at times.
I have an adolescent cockerel, Arian, who had an approx. half inch 'horn' on the end of his comb. Yesterday he took the liberty of mating a hen right under the nose of alpha Gordon (huge NNXBrahma cross). Gordon took exception and knocked him off and then engaged in a very short fight.
Next thing he is offering something red to the hen....oh no...it's the horn from Arian's comb.Half a second later and the hen has eaten it........Ewwwwwwww....what a way to see off your rivals.
Gordon is usually a very peaceful soul..... I guess he couldn't take the insult.
Arian didn't bleed much and now has a symmetrical comb. No further skirmishes between the two, but I don't think he'll take that kind of liberty again.
