Grossly misshapen egg, squatting, screaming

Are these two things related?
Often they are, as worms lead to poopy butts which will soil the nest bedding and from there can start an ascending infection of the oviduct when sticking to the everted cloaca during the act of egg laying.

That is also the main reason to keep the nest boxes clean and exchange the bedding rather more often.

True, butt(haha!) best to check the digestive system first.
And not worm without a fecal float done.
I stopped the fecal floats long ago, as just right after an all clear from the vet I found worm loads on the poop boards from the same night and learned, that depending on the kind of worms, they will only release their eggs in specific intervals (i.e. 2-3 weeks), so although the chicken is infested, you will not often find their eggs in the poop when doing the fecal floats.

Thanks for the advice, all. She was experiencing more and more distress, and we got her to a vet this morning. Unfortunately, the vet suspected egg yolk peritonitis, and poor girl was too far gone for treatment that would have resolved it. We sent her to the luxury chicken coop in the sky. I'm glad she's not suffering, and that she had as good a life as a chicken can.

You did a good job helping her and being a wonderful chicken mama 🌹
