Not really about chickens, but I have a pest problem. I have holes everywhere in my yard. They range from 1" to 3 and 4" in diameter. I know for a fact it is voles and ground squirrels. The voles I have seen , a few flying out from under the riding mower the rest being toyed with by the cats, but in the last year had yet to see what exactly was making the larger holes. I assumed it was ground squirrels but had not seen or heard a single one. Until this weekend that is. Unsuspecting little booger was sniffing pretty close to the wife's Peonies. I took my place (the spare bedroom window...AKA snipers hide) put on the good ol' boonie hat, and dispatched him with the .22LR....(fresh out of the shower and still in a bath towel mind you). The wife upon hearing of my adventurous Saturday morning just looked me in the eye and said " Wow, you are such a redneck". Yes sir the enemy is one soldier down in this battle for my land!!
I am building a new coop this spring and soon after getting more chickens. Maybe they can help with the pest problem as well. Wish me luck through the rest of the year!
