Would a groundhog ever go after a chicken? Today I came home to a mess of feathers in the yard and a dead groundhog all bloody around the neck. My dog was out with the girls, all the girls are fine not a mark on them. But something had to happen to one of them to explain the feathers. My guess is grounghog attacked a chicken and the dog took him out. But I have never heard of an aggressive groundhog...

I wonder the same thing... Something was getting my girls, during the day time and we always see a ground hog at random times around our property

Groundhogs are most definitely not meat eaters. They love carrots, broccoli, and lettuce though. Maybe the groundhogs was coming in to get at the scraps and the chickens told him no?

hmmmm I did throw half a head of cabbage and a few apples in there this morning...

Groundhogs LOVE apples....especially if they are partially rotting, lol. Don't get me wrong, groundhogs will protect themselves, and you really don't want to tangle with one, but they would have no reason to go after a chicken because they simply do not eat meat.

I rescued a baby one time from drowning (its den had been flooded- no other groundhogs including mom to be found) and raised it. They can be viscous if something scares them or attacks them, but they are pretty mild mannered other wise.
