I've about 60 chicks, 5 weeks old. Half are dark cornish crosses, and half layers (mostly RIR). I've been feeding them commercial starter/grower, but noticed the protein content was only around 17%. Talking to the guy at the local feed store, he suggested that many are using their turkey grower mix for chickens as well. He indicates that it is basically their mix for layers with some corn and soy product added. He states it runs about 21%.
It is the same price per 50 lbs as the commercially prepared stuff ($14.00), so naturally I bought some for the broilers. Any reason why it wouldn't be as good for the layers until they are ready for a straight lay ration? I can purchase this in larger quantities for a minor discount.
