Growing BOSS Update, sprouts

I took a handful and spread them out on a moistened paper towel in the oven. Pilot flame keeps it about 90 degrees in there. Should know in a couple of days if they sprout. I will update then. Thanks everyone.

Your, "variety mammoth" are they solid Black or do they have White/Silver Gray stripes?

If they have stripes they are common confectionery sunflowers and not the Oil variety. I have a pack of, "mammoth" sunflowers and they are stripes.

Yes they do have stripes and another member told me that although they are higher in protien than BOSS they are larger and should be hulled before feeding them. I'm not even going there. They also lack many of the essential oils found in BOSS.

My birds stuck up their beaks at the gray-stripe mammoth seeds. Spoilt birds.

I bought BOSS to plant this season. I found it from Southern Exposure Seed Exchange. I couldn't post link, but it'll be easy to find with a Google search. This source is reputable. The seeds ARE very hard to find.

I have a package of black oil sunflower seeds from burpee seed company.. must of bought them from home depot, lowes or walmart....not a lot in the package.. last year I hung the flowers from a string in the run....kept the chickies busy all day

I laid out a handfull of seeds yesterday. Put them between two moistened paper towels on a cookie sheet and put them in the oven. Pilot flame keeps it about 90 degrees in there. When I checked them a little while ago I found about ten percent of them had already sprouted. There is probably two hundred seeds in there far more than I can plant ( I have room for about 20) so I will put the healthiest sprouts in individual seed starting pots and let the rest continue to grow in the moist towels until they get a little larger then feed them to my girls.
Thanks to everyone who offered advice. Now all I need is springtime!
