Growing chickenfeed?

Cool. I've read that they will also eat june grass seed. I am going to be the happiest chicken owner ever if they will put a dent in the (bleepity bleeping) pigweed!!!

Cheers,
Michelle

Chickenhead,
Here's what is says about SOURCES for naked oats:

Naked oat seeds are available from several good seed companies, and will be listed in their catalogues as either Avena nuda or hulless oats. (I found it amusing that when I searched for Avena nuda seed sources on Google, the only sponsored link that popped up was a site for "Free Porno Videos.")

Here are several seed sources:

Johnny's Selected Seeds, www.johnnyseeds.com
Seeds of Change, www.seedsofchange.com
Bountiful Gardens: www.bountifulgardens.com
Bountiful Gardens also sells seeds of ancient wheat species

I will probably be better off just going to a large crop farm around here and buying straight off of them. What would be something to store large amounts of grain in? Something like barrels or something cheap and easy to move. Barrels would be weather proof and rodent proof.

I use barrels for storing horse feed. They work pretty well & keep the rodents out.

I will look into harvesting smaller quantities of grain and see what I can find. I'd like to grow a little wheat and oats in my garden, but don't really want a combine!

It might be just as easy to buy a bushel or two locally off of a farmer.

Cheers,
Michelle

Yes, I agree it would definitely be cheaper, but I think we all share the desire to try it ourselves for some reason. Why miss out on all the fun? (I mean hard labor). Why do we do this to ourselves?

I personally need something to do at noon in the mid-day sun.

At twelve noon
The natives swoon
And no further work is done,
But mad dogs and Englishmen
Go out in the midday sun.

I did find a small walk-behind combine type thing. It's verrry expensive, tho. If anyone wants to see it, look here.

Honey, I need a Ferrari!

Cheers,
Michelle

Very cool one-person harvester. I think the name *Ferrari* in the title gives the price away!
But the man in the pic isn't even sweating -- no mid-day sun labor there...
