Growing grass from seed/fertilizer question

Wow I knew I should have talked to yall before getting into this project! Great tips guys thank you very much. There is so much I don't know about maintaining the outside of a house it should embarrass me. How long should it take to establish a lawn that will have minimal sun? I do plan on using a seed specifically made for shade. There is a giant tree blocking the sun from the majority of the backyard during the winter.

I seeded my backyard last year, and it did fine till the darn girls ate it!

I will try again this spring, I didn't use fertilizer I didn't think it was needed, and don't really want that out there in my backyard, I figured the girls have been pooping enough anyway - and we did have grass before the chickens

If you did not have to worry about chickens and you did not care about going natural you would use 10-10-10 once the grass sprouted. Spreeding compost is a great idea or finding a natural spray fertilizer with a ratio of 10-10-10. When the grass is young you want a low first number, too much nitrogen can burn the young grass.

LOL yea I guess my buddy went through the same thing. He suggested seeding it for a few days and keep raking it in... Well the way he put it it was much funnier... His chooks went to town on his after a bunch of time put into it.

Thanks for all the responses eveyone! I really appreciate it. Sounds like I have a bit of work cut out for me. I can't wait to get started!!!

why are you buyin fertilizer if you have chickens?, what kind of grasses are you thinking of growin? have you considered pullin a soil sample? very helpful in your situation
