Growing grass in the run

yeah we have to keep our in a fence otherwise the neighbors dog will kill them since their old coop was a stupid pre fab one the roof fell apart and we had to get rid of it so they are staying in our garage until spring when we get their new coop but that dog tried to get past me to them in their dog pen(they get let out throughout the day)

Ya my dad build me a 4x8 coop and I just built the nesting boxes today and now my hen laid an egg and she wasn't on the roost with everyone else and she was sitting on the floor setting on her egg so who knows maybe she is going broody

Yes that's sorta what I was meaning but without the wood and just put the wire in the ground somehow maybe stakes and then they can eat the grass but not dig it up

They will try to scratch at it tho and the chicken wire could damage their feet, especially after it starts to rust and break up.
Infected cuts on chicken feet(bumblefoot) is no fun to deal with.

The compost box is there under the roost just to make that more clear and there next to that is where I want to put the grass

yeah that would work I would go from the edge of the compost all the way over to the other side and make it as wide as the compost box

I'd just make it a raised bed grazing frame that size. Fill it with dirt and potting mix, and make covers out of hardware cloth. Seed it with fodder, and let the chickens eat whatever comes up through the hardware cloth

I could put wheat in them my pap gave us about a fifty pound bag of wheat that he was using in his garden so I have some that I just use for there treats and don't know what to do with it

Watever works as long as it it not toxic to the birds you can put just about anything in there to grow, and they will eat it.
