Growing Grass in the Run

I should also add that our girls love ours! They have picked at the sides and it just kind floats! Still green on the inside though. The other box is lower in the run and turned it catches most erosion from the first and is set in nicely. I really should move that upper one....

I just laid st augustine in our chicken run. Maybe they'll kill it. Maybe they won't. They free range in the backyard most of the day and i keep watering the grass. I've only had the grass for about a week now And the only reason I laid it was to cover the hardwire cloth so they don't break their toes. We will see what happens.

Sod?
I'd be careful with that as sod is often treated with pesticides and herbicides.

Too late. But they don't even hang out in there anyway. They like to go to the sandy area under the shed (its on blocks). They stay under there so much I'm afraid that they'll try to lay their eggs there.

they will eat all the grass... and dust bath in sand and maybe in the dirt left over from the grass... they lay eggs in dark places.

Be careful if sod has the netting... it tangles their feet and legs. I have cut many loose from that stuff.

No netting. Just grass and dirt. And there's no eggs under the shed....yet. They will probably start laying soon though. We got them 2 weeks before Easter so we're excited to see them start laying.

Quick update @jthornton - The hardware cloth did indeed sag more as all the girls piled on and we've been baking in pretty hot weather these days...

I attached the HWC to the "catwalks" with UV resistant zip ties. Two ties per "catwalk" about one foot apart. It's MUCH more stable now. They've been tromping all over it since the sun went down. A vast improvement!
