Hi, I've previously written about this duck. I suspect he was picked up & dropped by his dad as a hatchling, possible trampled by his dad. No, it's not niacin deficiency. Yes, his dad is just about the dumbest duck I've seen.

My issue is now he has a messy bottom, I'd guess because he walks like a dorky little human toddler or rests his butt in poop when sitting.

My question is, what's the best way to get him clean? Warm wet rag? How about keeping him clean?
He's been separated from the other ducks but is now in his own pen with a new female. Will she help groom him?

Birds with existing leg problems that prevent them from practicing normal hygienic problems, often due get messy bottoms, Bumblefoot, or wet feather, etc. That is not uncommon. Unless you correct the existing condition, there's not much you can do besides clean the area well with a damp towel and try to encourage proper hygiene habitats to the best of your ability. Letting him swim in deep/clean water daily would be good.

Hi, thank you.
He did well when I let him swim in the (small, decorative) pond. I'll have to take out extra water for him to swim in.

That is good, and try to keep at that, and make sure he is getting to bathe in clean/deep water at the least once a day. However a challenge it may be, keeping his pen area as clean and dry as possible will aid in keeping the feathers clean. Checking up on his oil gland which is located near the tail, to ensure it isn't clogged, would be a good idea as well, since inactive birds often developed clogged, or infected oil glands which subsequently results in severe wet feather.

How would I unclog it if it was clogged up? Warm compress and massage it out?
Thank you for the advice! I'll be tarping up his own before I do the other pens.
