My gorgeous Buff Orpington has had a messy butt for a few days so I decided to bath her today and here is what I found:

Can anyone help? It is not solid - it is quite soft with no lumps inside and is about the size of a tennis ball. It is below her vent and sticking out quite a bit so I think that is why her fluffy butt was quite dirty.

Would be real interested in info on this. We have a RRI 7 1/2 months old and she just developed this problem a couple days ago. Same as yours in the pic. Eats/drinks well, runs with the flock, just has a real droopy bum. Soft when felt. Will keep an eye on this topic.

There are quite a few things it could be: a hernia, an abscess, a tumor of some sort...

If it feels like it is fluid filled, and doesn't feel like it could have intestines in it, then I would probably stick a large gauge needle in it (18 gauge or less - smaller gauge is a bigger needle), and see what I get back. Nothing or blood, its most likely a tumor. Pus its an abscess, or liquid and its a cyst. Food/fecal material, its a hernia. However after poking bowel with a large gauge needle there would likely be contamination of the abdomen and that could easily kill her. You want to be really sure that's not the case BEFORE sticking her with a needle.
