Growth on hen's comb

Quote:
No other hens have this. It looks about the same, but maybe a bit bigger...could be my imagination. Pictures help to track things - I'll snap a few tomorrow

This is what the state vet said, but someone on this forum said the tumors can be external...so not sure

....as best as I can tell, the swelling does not appear to be a result of the LL. Unfortunately, I cannot really tell what the lesion is.

The possibility exists that the other symptoms could be the result of LL, but they could also be signs of other problems. You can try a broad spectrum antibiotic, but it is a shot in the dark. If she continues to decline, I can put her asleep and perform another necropsy as well as sample the comb lesion. It might also be possible to sample the lesion, without sacrificing her, but the comb may bleed pretty heavily (wont look too pretty for a while).

Well - I've lost another hen to Lymphoid Leukosis - at least that's what the vet thinks just at first glance. We are waiting for the pathology report for confirmation.

This was not the hen with the growth on her comb. The state vet actually came out and picked up the dead hen and I asked him to take a look around and see if I'm maintaining the flock properly or if he noticed any gross errors on my part. While there I asked him to look at the growth. He wasn't sure what it was, but said that LL usually does not present as external tumors, so it was unlikely that it's a LL growth.

I haven't had a chance to take a new pic of this, but it's no longer whitish and it almost looks scab-like and much darker. I have noticed some barely recognizable darkened spots on a few of the other hens' combs. Anyone ever see this? Will try to post pics soon

Well the vet mentioned that, but said it didn't look like pox. The other hens don't have scabs, just darker areas, and I just noticed today, so he didn't see them.

All of this chicken rearing is so blasted mysterious

I'm sorry but I don't know for sure! I've noticed a white growth on my EE's comb, but she is healthy and unbothered by it. Could it be something else? Check out her crop draining, abdomen, and everything else. If everything but the comb is normal, I think your best bet is to do a home surgery on her comb.
Do NOT count on my suggestions as the best! I'm not a vet or anything. But if you think you can safely and successfully do it, cut out the lump on her comb, stop the bleeding, put BluKote or similar product on it, and isolate her to monitor progress. If nobody else replies and she steadily quickly declines, the surgery may be your best bet.
Good luck!
