Friend me on facebook. I totally understand the desire to keep bees. I have been wanting to do that for years, but will not until I get my husband on board. I would love to have pollinators close by and gather my own honey! With the worldwide decline of bees, we may all be scrambling to try and help them soon.
I have a laying flock, my first meaties, and dual purpose rabbits (poo for my garden, meat for my freezer). I was talking about my weekend with a friend recently and told him that I just used the first load of black gold from the rabbits on the garden and he said, remind me to never eat at your house. After I explained the difference between chemical fertilizers and natural fertilizers he was flabbergasted that he had never heard about natural fertilizers before. He is the same guy who didn't know what an acorn was. I'm not knocking him at all because he has a genuine interest in what we do, but has honestly never heard about, or thought about where his food comes from. Until he come out here and seen the chickens, he had never seen a chicken before. We introduced him to camping and fishing last year. He went camping with us this past weekend, and we took him morel hunting. He had never heard of them either. He now knows how to build an upside down fire, jug fish for catfish, and clean his catch. He is looking to buy a house outside of the city because his wife wants to garden and keep a few chickens. They are supposed to come over this weekend to help us set out the garden because his wife wants to learn all about it.
Your friend could be, and probably is just ignorant of why you do what you do. I am passionate about feeding my family good, wholesome food, preferably that I raise, gather, hunt or catch myself. And, I enjoy tending my livestock and weeding my garden...maybe I am mentally ill after all.
