Grrr.....Hobby Farm = Mental Illness?

The only way I could see it as mental illness is if you tried to keep Africanized bees on purpose!

Enjoy your farm to the greatest extent possible. Sooner or later, your friend will be over and have some toast with homegrown honey on it and be tossing veggie scraps from your garden into the chicken pen, and go home with a grab bag of veggies and a half dozen eggs and think how lucky she was to visit. Or not, in which case her opinion doesn't matter if she is not that close of a friend.

Either that, or they will be on FB moaning about the cost of groceries, about how they really had to cut back, and you can suggest they indulge themselves in a bit of mentall illness and start a small garden, keep a few chickens themselves.

If things get rough, you will have plenty, and those who mocked will be begging, and wished they had enough know-how to raise some bees for honey.

My thoughts exactly. Family thinks I'm weird for the having my hens but who do they look to for eggs.

You know, there is an option to remove friends on facebook

I personally have no patience to deal with jerks who want to degrade me. You wouldn't believe the near scandal within my family and group of friends when I decided to get some chickens. My God you would think I was telling everyone I was becoming a Canibal!

I say screw them, don't let them trample over your happiness or attempt to control you through guilt, shame or any other emotion!

perhaps you could mention on facebook something about how you enjoy your many bounties of your hobby farm (and make it pleasingly descriptive, such as how you are enjoying your breakfast made with fresh eggs with your toast and pure fresh honey, lol) all the while engulfed in this terrible mental illness?

*quietly hides the literature on beekeeping she picked up yesterday* And here I thought it would just be an economical thing to have around since we eat a lot of honey and keep a big garden and orchard....

I agree. I say take them off the friends list or block them if need be. There is no need for negativity that is under the guise of sounding intellectually superior. We have enough of that when we turn on the national news commentaries!

When I talk about my homesteading to the people I work with, you can tell they think I am nuts, LOL, but most aren't rude enough to call me mental. What you're doing is what people have done for centuries. Your "friend" is most likely a progressive uber-liberal who believes all of the changes in the past 50 years have been progress, and that your way of life is archaic. I however, am envious of you. You're getting pigs!!! (I have the chickens, bees, and garden)
