Ok we are starting on our homemade coop this weekend. I get my 1 day old chicks this afternoon and I have researched so much I am going bonkers!!

So I am hoping someone can answer a question for me.

We are building a coop that will be up off the ground about 3-4 feet and the chickens will be able to get underneath for shade and so forth. And they will have their own fenced in yard. And here lies the question. It's going to be all grass. (coop is being built in backyard) I have looked at alot of pictures and i rarely see that they are all grass. If this is not ideal any ideas on how to change it?

This might be a stupid question but I was taught the only stupid question is the one that is not asked. And I want to make my new "children" happy!!!!

Your chickens will make it grass-free in no time

Its not that they dont want the run to be grass, its the fact that no matter what you do your chickens will destroy all grass in a matter of days...

LOL!! Thank you everyone for the input. I can rest easy now! I think I am going to find myself addicted to BYC very soon!

#1 - as everyone else has said, we can't KEEP grass in our runs.

#2 - the addiction to BYC is not gradual. WHAM! You gotta check on it all the time.

#3 - Wait for the chicken addiction to kick in. Mwaaaahaaaahaaaaaa.

Not a stupid question at all. Actually a good observation.

It's not just that they eat the grass and other green stuff. They scratch the ground and dig the roots up trying to find bugs and grit and make places to take dust baths. Then they'll eat the roots. Their poop is so strong that it will burn anything that tries to grow. They especially love to eat anything that tries to sprout. They will stick their heads through the wire on the run if they can to get their heads through to eat anything green out there. Don't worry. Too much grass in the run will not be a problem long.
