What a ditz. I agree that the idea of chicks as kids' temporary pets needs to go (I should say brats....not kids in general...you know what I mean, I hope) .

I saw an article not long ago that some feed store in CA does "rent a chick" at Easter --- the kid keeps it for 2 weeks and then returns. Not sure how I feel about this --- on one hand at least the chick goes back to a good home, but on the other hand it seems to actually reinforce the idea of chicks as throwaway play-toys.
