Good morning everyone-

I currently live in a rental in Hawaii (Oahu) and cannot legally own my own chickens, but I have been feeding some local feral chickens that visit me regularly. This lady is one and I think she is so pretty šŸ˜ .

The genetic makeup of the birds here is strange because there is certainty some dominant traits (lots of black and the roosters almost all have gamecock colors) but what would you personally guess is her makeup?

I'm going to be moving and starting a flock again next year, hoping for a lot of white/mottled patterns

Are all of the local chickens similar in appearance?
When something like that happens in my country we just refer to them as ā€œBaladiā€ meaning ā€œof the townā€ or local. And they usually are a mix of so many things, that were mixed such a long time ago, that it’s basically impossible to tell what is their genetic makeup.

She appears to be black breasted red with the mottling gene, but there may be other things going on since she probably has very mixed color genetics.

Mottling can be heavy or light, depending on genetics. In this case it is heavy. She looks very much like a white hackle gamefowl hen, but her coloring is also very similar to speckled Sussex, Jubilee Orpingtons, spangled Russian Orloffs and spangled old English game bantams, among others.

Despite the different names of these color patterns, it is the mottling gene at work that gives the white spots. The mottling gene is recessive, which means two copies must be present for it to express itself. Which, in turn, means both parents must have at least one copy of this gene for it to show in the offspring.

She’s definitely got some game in her. My first thought was also part Russian Orloff, since it almost looks like she’s got a bit of a beard. She’s quite pretty!
