We recently had dna testing done on one of our dogs. I never thought I would do something like that, but this dog is so great, we really wanted to know what breeds he is so that we can try to get another dog like him someday. The shelter had given us the guess of Greater Swiss Mountain Dog when we adopted him at 9wks old. He is 65lbs, has lots of natural pulling instinct (he's a great urban musher!), and has a generally calm demeanor. He isn't a big barker unless he is waiting to be hooked up to the scooter and start pulling. He gets along well with other dogs, goats, and chickens though he does like to chase cats. So, what breeds would you guess he is?

Definitely looks swiss mountain dog but he probably has something else hiding in there as he is a bit small at least the pics i see the dogs always look much bigger. Ive read up on the breed and have always wanted one as they do seam like a great dog.

honestly my guess would be bully breed mix from his face, hes got a very APBT face and looks alot like the pitbull shepard and pitbull rottie mixes in this area,
hes about the right size to be a pit x shepard or a small pitbull rotty mix, would explain his pulling power and pitbulls when raised right are some of the best family dogs in existence.

dont put too much stock into the DNA testing, a freind of mine did it for her 6th generation pure bred and it came back with a number of breeds that may have gone into the collies origional genetic makeup but there was no way in heck those breeds were in there in the reacent past (she could trace this dogs pedigree back to when the breed was first recognized...

he sure is a cutie pie though, definatly a bully face...

there could be swissy in there, but i see more pit x shepard type
his ears are 100% no doubt bully breed, hes got rose ears and a pitty smile

while his coloring is similar i just dont see swissy in his body structure or face

This however is a nice smiley natural eared pitty, notice the big smile, lovely rose ears and well defined cheeks.

I don't completely trust the dna tests either, but what it came back with makes sense. It did NOT say he had any greater swiss in him. Any other guesses?

Other than the rather obvious pit that everyone else has remarked on, there is something about him that reminds me of a couple Belgian shepherds that we owned many years ago. The shading in his coat looks like one of them, and those light amber eyes remind me of the other! (Also the pulling. Our boys had a blast pulling my hubby on a skateboard!)

ok how about shar pei something in the face give it that look other then that with the markings id say a German Shepherd mix

Well, the test came back saying his dna matched two different breeds at least 25%, but less than 50%. So apparently he is german shepherd, beagle, and some other stuff that didn't match anything enough to tell. I can see those breeds in him, the beagle only in the coloring, but the german in his demeanor.
