Guess this MUTT!!! (pic heavy)

You would have lucked out on that one, if he turns out to be a giant schnauzer! They are incredibly smart.

That's why I thought Shepherd, at first. As he gets older, his features are changing, although I've known some type of terrier from day 1. He is super smart. DH was against getting a dog at all, but has fallen in love with him!

After our Boston was returned, she had a new collar. I gave her the choice of her old collar or the new one, and she chose the old one. I walked off and left her new collar on the ground. A little while later, Rex came in, sat at my feet, and dropped the collar on the ground. He's worn it ever since! I thought that was really smart, and cute!

He learned his name immediately, and no and a few other phrases. He seems smart and really eager to please. Like I said before, he is a lot like a rescue dog, considering where he came from and what he's been through.

Sounds like a giant schnauzer to me. We had a giant that passed away a couple of years ago, he was so smart. Our Aussie taught him to help heard the cattle, we made a harness for him and he pulled water to the horses in the winter time on a large sled (pulled it about 800 feet, twice a day) saved my back, and he was the best worker around. Your husband should love him, just give him a job and he will earn his food!

Sounds like a perfect dog! I got new baby chicks today, and he was really interested in their peeping, but didn't want to actually touch them with his nose. He already got taught a lesson about getting too close to the "big girls" so he gives them their space, while hanging out with them. LOL!

I guess the big question is, am I going to have to groom him?? I wanted a low-maintenance dog. If I don't shave him in the summer, will he suffer? Of course, I guess the boys can shave him with the clippers...they'd love it and it doesn't matter what he looks like, I just want him to be comfortable.

He's really grown a lot in the past week. I'll have to post updated pics in a few weeks!

wirey coats like it looks like he has CAN be clipped or stripped to make them look "fancy" or "cleaner"
but for the most part a good regular comb through with a greyhound comb and a good diet will keep the coat good.

no HEALTHY coat will need to be shaved in the summer
dog hair is a wonderfull insulator...
assuming any undercoat is properly "blown" (or removed) its actually better for the dog to NOT shave it in the summer as the outer coat helps keep them cool.
its the undercoat that can get caught that will cause heat issues and wirey breeds dont typically have an undercoat.

Yeah, what you would call his undercoat is like a slick short fur. The overcoat is wiry and sparse. That is good to know.

Thanks for the info!

I would just see how it goes with his coat. I still think he mixed, so he probably wont need to be groomed

It he does end up needing to be clipped, just put a guard on the clippers and shave him up, who cares what he looks like as long as he is comfortable. Grooming is not neccicarily about him being hot, if he starts to look like Bob Marley (dreaded, and smelly) then you know he needs a hair cut

Have the kids start brushing him now just in case, and that way he will like it as he gets older. I definitely dont cut my dogs coats in the winter, just brush them about once a week, and they would freeze there cute butts off!!

Have fun!

Mini Shanuazer and maybe jack russel mix? Sorry I cant spell. lol

I want to say Scottie or Schnauzer and Terrier? So cute, no matter what it is~!
