Guidance for future reference if you don't mind

Hi all, sorry a couple of questions for my own sanity and future reference

I got 4 hens on Friday, by Monday, two had died of coccidiosis and one with suspected sour crop. My guessing is this is nothing I have done and they were infected before they arrived ..... hopefully, in a weird kind of way!

For future reference can you treat both cocci and sour crop together? Also, how would I do that?.

My other chickens are having a treatment of coxoid (UK based) and have been for 4 days and I plan to half the dose the week following. Although, little clots were found in the smallest hens this dropping this morning

how do I know the treatment is working?? I have read so much about the life cycle of the parasite and the occysts but how do I know they are being shed and it's not just the cocci getting more severe?

Lastly, is keeping chickens always this stressful I feel like I'm just having the worst time of something I have planned, looked forward too and worked towards for a long time.

I'm sorry you're having trouble.

The new hens that died, did you have a necropsy/testing for Coccidiosis? How do you know that's what they died from over the course of just a few days?

You are also treating your "other" chickens with Coxoid - how long have you had those chickens? Can you get some photos of them and their poop?

Coccidia is a protozoa found in chicken poop and in the soil. There are 9 strains that chickens can have. When there is an overload, that's when you have trouble - chickens will generally always have some Coccidia in their poop. Getting a fecal float to see if there is an overload will help you determine if you need to treat further. Behavior of the chickens themselves will also tell a tale. Chickens that have an overload will be unthrifty, unkempt, lethargic, not eating/drinking, poop can have mucous or blood, production would be decreased as well.

You should be able to treat Sour Crop and Coccidiosis at the same time.

Seeking vet care is always best if that's an option for you.

hi, the first two had blood in their droppings, a lot of blood, I didn't get the fecal test done or an autopsy. As they went down hill so quickly I thought it was critical to treat 'suspected' cocci, albeit with no effect.

my mini silkie, weighs 421g at 9 weeks now has bloody droppings. It seemed relevant given the circumstances, to treat the whole flock. I have one (silkie) who is thriving - no symptoms, change in behav

Typical symptoms of cocci also presented, lethargy, not eating, drinking, disinterest in the surroundings.

all 4 arrived the same day, last Friday. I am feeding them with the feed provided from the breeder - grower feed.

I have googled poultry vets and they are in Huddersfield and I am north Manchester.

What are you feeding?
Don't add any other extra vitamins to their food or water during the treatment period of the Coxoid.
