Guinea Advice

Thanks for all the great advice txcarl1258 and Hotcookie, well as you know I lost one keet today but then surprise surprise I have another so far a total of 4...the three older ones are getting around great and have started to listen to foster mums eating que etc and they are just adorable little things...Do I need to give them any thing other than water and chick starter feed which is 20% protein? I just don't want to make any mistakes with them and mum is doing really well, she is sorting them out and most importantly keeping them warm...she is such a gorgeous hen and has taken them in with no trouble at all.

Guinea keets like turkey poults need a higher percent protein than can be found in 20% chick starter. The following was posted by PeepsCA on 6/12/2011 and is still very good advice today:

"I've answered this question on this forum time and time again, only to have people argue with me that their keets do fine on chick starter. So I am posting it here in hopes of educating people that Guinea Fowl have different nutritional needs than chickens do, from keet all the way up to adult age.

What do you feed keets? Do they get medicated crumbles or just plain crumbles, or do they need the higher protein game starter crumbles?

I have always fed mine regular chick feed. That may not be the best though.

No, it's not the best... and yes they DO need a higher protein starter feed. Many people get away with raising their keets on it but chick starter does not have enough protein in it for the keets to develop at the proper rate. Guinea fowl keets should be fed a higher protein Turkey, Game Bird or Pheasant starter feed containig between 25%-30% protein (27-28% is the best), medicated with Amproium until they are 6-8 wks old, then they should be gradually/slowly switched over to a grower feed or flock raiser with no less than 20% protein in it until they are 12 wks old. After that their main diet can be switched over to an all purpose poultry feed or a layer feed containing between 16%-18% protein. 16% protein is the absolute minimum adult Guineas should be fed as a main diet.

I really wish people would stop suggesting chick starter feeds and chick grower feeds for raising Guinea Fowl keets on, because it's not the correct feed for them if you want them to grow and develop at the proper rate (feathers, bones, muscles and organs etc). I always compare feeding chick starter to keets with feeding little kids twinkies and soda pop, yes they do still grow and develop (always slower than the rest of the kids, and usually with developing health issues later on in life because of it), it's just not healthy and it doesn't meet their nutritional needs! Guinea Fowl keets are not chickens, they develop at a completely different rate and have completely different nutritional needs, they need more protein than chickens do... I cannot stress this enough.

Scratch and grains/seeds like wild birds seeds and millet should be given as a treat only after they are older, and only in small amounts, all of these feeds are way too high in fats and sugars and do not have enough protein in them to be their staple diet. They can develop major health issues from being fed incorrectly, and will never live up to their full potential as they will if fed correctly from day one.

Please, anyone getting Guineas Fowl or already currently owning Guinea Fowl and you really do care about your birds' health - do your homework and read up on their nutritional needs! If you don't agree with what I've posted here, then contact a major Guinea Fowl breeder and ask them what THEY feed their keets and Guineas.

I have read before that if you can't get a higher percent protein than regular chick starter that you can supplement it by crumbling hard boiled eggs.

Good luck with your keets and if you really want to learn about guineas, read the posts made by PeepsCA

Good luck with your keets.

Fantastic, thanks so very much, I will be off to my grain store tomorrow to see if I can get Turkey, game bird or pheasant starter, then a grower feed or flock raiser...thanks so very much....it is wonderful advice....here are some pics for all to see of my new keets, I have 4 now, and hope to get a couple more at least, but I wont be gready, I am happy I got some, seems I lost mum so tragically :(

They are so cute! Looks like you may have a lavender or two. What color are the parents? I can't have guineas where I live so I will live vicariously thru you!

Oh thanks, I have 5 babies today and as far as colours well the mum was a dark greyish I would have said, possibly lavender??? The male is a light grey/blue colour.....I got a game bird starter today, that is 28% Protein but has no medication in it??? I cant find anything else, the turkey starter was only 20% protein with medication, and I had them on chick starter feed 20% Protein and that has medication in it, so what do I do this is so confusing. I really appreciate all the advice that I have been getting..

Your game bird starter should be fine. It is important for the keets to have the extra protein.

If you want, you could mix 1 part of your 20% chick feed with 4 parts of your 28% game starter which would give you a mix that is 26% protein and would allow the keets to get plenty of protein and still get some of the medicated feed.

Oh thanks so very much I wondered if I could do this, but I was thinking it may decrease the protein intake, but one to 4 sounds great...Thank you thank you thank you.......:) :) :)

just out of curiosity do guineas get red mites? I noticed I had some in my coop and I clean it everyday and try and do all the right things, but we have had so much heat and great for breeding, I am about to go out and do the coop and dust my chickens, but the adult guinea mingle, so is it safe to do them as well??

I would like to update, I have another Keet, in total 6 now and boy oh boy are they cute, they are following their foster mums que to eat and drink and are booping around, except the new born she/he is still a little slow but drying off beautifully........I am so excited that I have Keets....I did make the decision to cull some eggs, which worried me like crazy, but I just didn't think that my foster mum chicken would cope, now I wonder how many would have actually been hatched :( I am going to keep all my Keets as I just cant stand the thought that they would go to someone that wouldn't care for them as much as me......I also have 7 new ducklings as of today as well, so it is full on in my paddock with babies and babies....Through out this experience I have learnt so much and I am putting a journal together, so as I have all this great advice on hand....I will get some more pics soon and pop them up........

Here are some new pics of my Keets, as mentioned I have 6 now :) I am so happy and I just hope they all do well...I have them in a hut at the moment, It is small but big enough for them and mum, it is snake proof, mouse proof, insulated, well ventilated we made them just for broody's and we have two in our yard, one has 4 chickens in it at the moment, the other have foster mum and keets..all my other chickens have a hut in the paddock, we have an enclosed paddock on our 5 acres so as to make it safe for all. Our ducks have large enclosure in the paddock as well and they co habitat with the guineas at night, then they are let out to roam, we will be extending our enclosed paddock and making it bigger, so as they have more paddock to explore seems my family has increased too 8 guineas 6 of them keets at the moment a mum duck with 2 ducklings, another mum duck with 7 ducklings to date, she still has a couple of eggs, I have 2 roosters, 10 ladies, as well as 3 cats, and one dog which is soon to be two as we are adopting a dog that is with chickens, as her owner has cancer and we are taking her 4 chickens, plus a horse, plus our beautiful (woody) who is a Cockatiel....Oh and our beautiful Drake who is a gentle, loving boy!

HERES THE KEETS:

Oh I have to give an update, I woke up to yet another baby Keet today, this in total this far is 7! How amazing and how wonderful. she still has another 3 eggs, I wonder if she will hatch anymore....They are the cutest little things I have seen sooooooooo tiny.....I have them in a brooder box with Foster mum which is off the ground, I have a plank of wood with rungs for steps, but I am not sure if keets will manage, chicks do, but they are a bit bigger when born, as I am sure mum will want to roam with them soon. how soon should I let them out with mum, cos they are lil things
