Guinea Challenges

Yep.. er, nope. We didn’t make it that far. I took a whuppin’ just trying to get eggs out of the nest box. And lived to tell about it haha.
lesson learned. But, the eggs under her are still infertile.
I have never taken a beating from a guinea. My herding stick has been attacked viciously when used to move a broody guinea hen off of her nest. The attacks instantly stop once they realize who is on the other end of the stick.

I have been thoroughly flogged when stealing new poults from a turkey hen. I always try to maneuver the hen so she is behind me. The floggings are as close as I can come to getting a massage.

they had baby turkeys there with the guineas I wanted them sooooooooo bad!!! But I didnt get any because I was afraid my boyfriend would want to eat them when they got eatin' size and I just wanted them to love them.

Once upon a time a long long time ago- and I wish my friend Robin was still alive to laugh at this memory like she always did- I was at RObins farm and she had geese...*snorf and I walked up to a goose on a nest and thought I was going to look under her for goslings.
I was convinced she broke my arm. Robin couldnt stop laughing long enough to see if the bones were stickin out of my arm like it felt they were.
It wasnt broken but I had the hugest "goose egg" bruise on my forearm.
I learnt real fast to respect a broody of all species.

I had an Airedale get cured of being an egg sucking dog by a goose. She had been helping herself to a daily egg from the Goose nest. On this particular day, the goose was still on the nest when the dog was ready to get an egg. She started to stick her nose under the goose to get an egg. The goose grabbed a mouthful of the dog's upper lip on the side and twisted as hard as she could. The dog came boiling out of there dragging the goose for about 100 ft. before the goose finally let go and raced back to her nest. The dog never bothered the goose again.

Haven’t you had an interesting time of it!!! So sorry about the loss of your birds to a dog. :hitI have a broody guineas right now, and I’m getting her off the nest every evening with a herding stick to collect eggs so that they won’t develop under her. I worked a lot with broody chicken and guinea hens last summer, and had little luck with the guineas, although I may give my broody mum a few eggs to break her broodiness and give her a chance at being a better mom than the others. She is the only one I have that was actually hatched under a guinea mom and actually cared for, at least for a few days. Anyway, with all that broodiness last year, I did have broody guineas moms kill multiple keets that hatched under them. They looked so happy about it too (I had a camera on them but was too slow to save the hatchlings), I imagine that they wanted to tidy up their nest that had these odd creatures crawling in it... I worry that your mom might do that to any keets slipped under her. Guineas seem to still be on alert at night, so you won’t really be able to sneak them under her like you might a chicken. Even if she doesn’t erupt off the nest when you touch it, she will be on high alert when she first senses the keet... At any rate, I wish you the best of luck and hope you’ll update us!

Im learning as we go. I have decided that I will just raise these big enough to put in the other pen and hope she joins them once they can free-range. And she can be a guinea again instead of a mean chicken. And at that point, when I fuss about how they drive me crazy with their loud noise;just to hear themselves make noise', you all can remind me that I asked for it.
I still want the turkeys.
I mentioned them last night and my bf said "why didnt you get the turkeys". HOWEVER, if I would have brought them home, he would have been talking different :plbb

OFF TOPIC-I just noticed that it says I am in Southeast Michigan. Well, I was until three years ago. Im in Alabama now. Im in Alabama with a bazillion bantam and a few standard cockerels and they are all going to need somewhere to go live because I cannot cannot cannot have a bazillion cockerels, me and the few girls say so.
Anyhow, I digress...how do I change where I live on the side over there ?

pssst.... my location is not there when I click on my name...
Of course not. Click on your User button in the header. It is right next to the conversation button. When the drop down menu pops up, click on Account Details. When that page opens scroll down to where it says Location. Change your location, click on Save.

Do not click on your name that is to the left of each of your posts. You have to click on your User button in the main header.
