Guinea food?

I feed the chicks turkey starter. They recommend game bird starter but my feed store doesn't carry it and they say turkey starter is just as good. I feed the older birds lay crumbles but mostly they just forage and find their own food.

Gamebird feed works for all ages. Turkey starter is better than chick starter. If you can't get anything else nonmedicated then you can feed chicken layer feed as they get older. They'll forage plenty of extra protein on their own if allowed to free range.

You should start them on medicated gamebird feed (28% protein) until they are 5 months old. The I just feed mine layer pellets, layer mash, and corn in a outside feeder (mine are free range)

I started Mine out with gamebird starter and now they eat scratch and everything the chickens eat. I also give them millet seed. Mine free range too but havent left far from the coop since all the snow is still on the ground.

We got about 6 inches during the night a couple weeks ago and this was the first snow my guineas had ever seen! Do you know that they didn't fly down from their roost tree until 3 days later???

Most gamebird feed and starter I've seen is not medicated. Quail and other small gamebirds overdose easily on the medication. I killed a few when I had to use medicated chick starter for a week. While I don't think medicated feed is a problem with guinea fowl telling someone to look for medicated gamebird feed probably won't go so well for them. Also it's darn hard to find 28% feed in a lot of places. That's about as high of protein as poultry feeds go and only a few brands actually have 28-30%. The highest I can get is 22%. I supplement my button quail with 40% protein dog food. Guineas seem to do well on just about anything but if you have the option you want to get the highest protein food available.
