I read somewhere that guinea fowl are useful to have with free-range hens as they are great alarms. Anyone have experience with this? Or info to pass on?

A guinea-raiser will log on here at some point and enlighten us all. I have read several times that they are good for sounding an alarm, as are peafowl. Guineas are also supposed to be especially good at finding/eating chiggers which are often overlooked by most chooks. I wanted one with my order of pullets but could not get only one. Had to order 6. I just wanted one packed in same box with my 25 chicks.

I used to raise 6 colors of guineas and about 6 colors of peafowl. between the two if anything came onto our yard day or night I knew about it. I'm a pretty heavy sleeper but when those guineas sound off it'll wake even me up. The closest pen we had with guineas in it was clear across the yard or half way's across the farm and I could still hear them at night with the windows closed in the house.

We too have guineas and they not only warn us if person, strange animal or preditor is in the yard but they warn us when they bump into each other. We love our guineas, they are hilarious. We read that not only are they good for ticks etc. but they eat seeds of weed plants that can infest the fields. They are loud but we love them around.

My friends with guineas love them , but say they sound their alarms so often over imagined threats that they become like the little boy who cried wolf .
